Patching some holes in my portfolio in anticipation for my visit to Siggraph 2012 in L.A.
These are to strengthen my weapon design portfolio. The emphasis here was to showcase my ability to quickly create a variety of very different looking concepts. Not spending too much time on the details at this stage. In a studio environment, an art director might have me do a few pages of these, then pick and chose the elements from several that work well, and have me develop it into a more finished concept, which would then be handed over to the 3D team for modeling.
These are meant to be assault rifle weapons. They go from more contemporary at the top, to more outlandish and futuristic as they move down. The first three would use conventional ammunition, whereas the bottom three would use technology that we don't currently possess, such as hybrid energy/kinetic ammo, or purely directed energy discharge.

This is very true for the real world. I suppose in a fantasy or sci-fi setting (like what these are meant for) designers can take a bit more of an artistic license and just focus on the looking cool factor. Although I do try and design with a certain amount of believable functionality as well. This is the best comment I've gotten in a long long time. I get sick of the endless praise honestly.
well, these *look* cool, but they'll fall apart from the slightest drop
of course, sci-fi somewhat justifies strange design, but there should be some explanation, like super-strong materials...
