Iím back! Itís been a long time since Iíve been able to post new artwork due to a variety of circumstances.
Anyway, Iím not claiming to be the first person to make an Admiral Akbar reference, and Iím sure some barista somewhere already thought of this a long time ago! But I thought I would create my own take regardless.
This parody featuring a minor Return of the Jedi character, and a Starbucks Frappuccino is at its heart a commentary on Advertising, Consumerism and internet memes. Starbucks and Star Wars, to me, represent quintessential examples of the American corporation, and an American entertainment franchise. Ad people will often use crossover campaigns with the intention that the marketing power of both brands can hopefully play off of one another and subtly influence the consumer. Itís an interesting phenomenon that seems to be growing more commonplace these days (thinking of 007 and Heineken).
The power of internet memes is also clearly becoming mainstream, and I am pretty confident they can be considered an art form by now. If itís going to be art though, why not do it with a little traditional craftsmanship and the foundations of visual design?
This was created from scratch using an old Wacom Intuos 3 graphics tablet, and Adobe Photoshop CS5 with custom brushes.
